Since early childhood I’ve had this fascination with particular sounds. Back then, when time was abundant, I’d spend hours sitting by a brook listening to it’s voices, or relaxing in a forest on a windy day. I liked the mild hum of electrical transformers, and the buzz of a swarm of bees. My father kept bees, so often I’d creep up as close to the hive as I’d dare and let my mind drift away to the pleasant droning. I had similar experiences later, as a teenage punk I’d frequent musical venues where I participated in a modern form of ecstatic movement; slam dancing. When I returned home to rest, I’d be able to listen closely to that loud ringing in my ears (which sometimes would last for days.) I discovered that listening closely and really contemplating these sounds, in a relaxed but attentive way was the key to unlocking my imagination. The sounds would change and grow into the most beautiful music. It would flow in long waves that felt at times to push or pull my body, like and ocean wave would. Then there would be visions, like dreams, but more lucid, (probably more lucid than I’m feeling right now.) Currently, I am engaged in a set of prints called the Natural reflection series. In these works, I move from surreal abstracted imagery, which I’ve so often used to describe the “end product” of a visionary experience, to physically realistic imagery. My hope is to describe some of those mysterious moments in the natural world that prompted the “beginning” of a visionary experience. I believe that everyone has had moments and experiences such as these; but in a world such as it is today, they are so easy to forget. If I can manage through my work, to remind anyone of such and occurrence in their life; then well, it’s been a good day.
